this reminds me of a story i read once about the intrepid space explorers who landed on a planet with very large tree like structures on it unknowing that the tree like structures were very aware and concious of their own reality and who picked up these tiny interesting little space explorer creatures that tickled their roots and I think the story goes how interested they were when they pulled the little creatures limbs off like "She loves me, she loves me not" type of scenario, and what weird sounds they made and the red stuff that spurted out when they did so?

pretty gruesome story....I forgot the authors name.
